Settling In

The Koverman household has done a pretty good job settling in! We have all had to do some adjusting. Lottie on her sleep schedule, which has gone great.  She is also doing some adjusting to learn how to play with toys. We can tell she either never had much in the toy department or no one taught her how to play. She is doing great with it and likes the toys for the younger kiddos, like the stacker, shape sorter, and push and pop up toy. Its so funny cause I push all of these toys for my student's babies of like 4-6 months and poor Lottie is just learning how to play with them at 2. Poor thing is even fascinated with a baby rattle!!! So sad.  She is learning very fast and I think we will be moving on to bigger kid toys sooner than later. Lottie actually has learned to play by herself for very short bits of time! just enough time for me to send a quick email, or get the dishes washed up from breakfast. She still absolutely loves being held which we try to get lots of cuddling time in too.  She is walking much better, although she still has falls throughout the day. We are working on other gross motor skills such as rolling over, crawling, and doing play sit ups with mommy. Lottie was in her crib all day so her trunk skills and crawling skills were never developed. She hates to crawl so we try not to do too much of it. Crawling is one of the most important left/right brain activities for a child!! I always say this is my my twin nieces are soooo smart! They crawled till they were like 21 months.

I feel with my background that I am pretty darn good at helping her with gross motor skills and even her fine motor which is pretty good considering. But I think her speech is going to be the biggest challenge. You see even her Chinese is horrible! lol She just doesn't say much at all. Not even babbling.  Just something that sounds like hi, and baba. B's are easy for her but that's about it. We are working on m's but I think I will really just need the help of the speech therapist on that one!!

She has all of her doctor's appointments next week. She goes to the International Adoption Clinic on Wednesday for a full check up of everything! It will take 4 hours but will be so worth it, we should get a good idea of where she is at developmentally and a general overview of her health. We also go for a consultation that day to see the Ocularist, this is the Doctor that will put in her prosthetic eye. We will start out with a clear lens to prepare her for the prosthetic eye. But it will be nice to find out what we are going to be dealing with for certain. And it will be nice for her to meet the doctor that she will have a ongoing relationship with for the rest of her life!!!
On the 13th we go to see the Opthamologist. This will be the Doctor to tell us how she sees out of both eyes. They will have to do a ultrasound of the eye and a full dilated eye exam. I hated doing this to her two days in a roll but did not have much choice as the next appointment was awhile aways.

So how are mom and dad doing, as if you care!! lol  We are doing okay. i am still grieving my previous care free lifestyle and adjusting to the constant care of a little one, which can be very hard! But rewarding. It gets better and better each day. I am still battling the 2nd sinus infection, but its getting lots better.

Matt is back to work and a little sad that I am having a hard time adjusting and that me and Lottie are sick and he is not here to help!! But he absolutely loves it when he comes through the door and Lottie runs up to him and gives him a hug!!!

So to end the post I thought I would list some of the things Lottie hates and loves!!!

Lottie hates

1.Medicine!! Yuck Yuck Yuck!! and she makes it so hard on mommy and baba to have to force it on her!!

2.Anything liquid! No water, apple juice, nothing!! just her formula which we were hoping to get her off of sooner than later! Guess not!

3. Sleep! At least getting to sleep, she can fight anywhere from 20 min to an hour on sleep! But once she goes she is a great sleeper.

4. Crawling, as I mentioned in my last post, just frustrating for her.

Lottie loves

1. Food- wow does she love it! she will eat anything in front of her!!!

2. Being held! she is a big I want to be held little girl!! Loves loves loves it!

3. Electronics. She will try and snatch the camera, cell phone, or lap top computer from you after taking a pic! Almost every time!

Lottie and Tippy are learning to tolerate each other. I guess its really Tippy is learning to tolerate her! Lottie already knows she has to watch her boundaries with Tippy around!! lol the look she gives when Tippy is close to her is priceless!!

Here are some pics since she has been home!

  1. I am so glad to hear she is progressing, and that you know the way that she's supposed to be doing so! I took a Free class from Hadley School for the Blind on-line that helped me, but she has more sight than either of mine do.
Have you joined the micro Yahoo group? I just mention it because every now and then there is a parent who is having conformer issues and they send in emails for help, and get really fast response from other parents. (usually when It's dropped out & they have to put it back in) BTW, she looks really good, eye orbit size, like it won't be an issue to get one in soon.
Here's praying The whole couple days of Dr's visits goes well.
Enjoy the snuggles, you have years of missed ones to make up for!

  2. Hey Kim,

Reading your post was almost like reading one written about Parker. We've been to all his doctor appointments already. We're still waiting for his labs, but they will be here early next week. He walks with his feet and his hips turned out so we're having an MRI to make sure everything is working there. (He had surgery on his colon in China and they went in right at the top of his anus. We want to make sure there isn't any nerve damage.) He's been to the chiropractor to help straighten him out from being in the crib for the first year. We're also going to physical therapy to help him learn to crawl (he can crawl, but he drags his legs up a bit more than he actually moves them up). I'm trying to get him enrolled in the special needs PreK class at my school. I think he'll qualify in speech and physical therapy. We'll see.
He is getting better with the dogs. He's fine actually, as long as he's chasing them with something... a baby doll stroller, a balloon, a car that makes noise... they're getting lots of exercise! :o)
I'm glad to hear that things are going well with you guys. Things are great here. Parker has been so easy going and sweet. We have been soooooooo lucky! I told Vuong I'd be ready to go back next year for China baby #2. He reminded me that as easy as Parker has been, the next one could be that hard. Bring it on! We have plenty of empty bedrooms. Let's fill them up! (Not really, I'm just pretending to take the Catholic thing seriously!) Vuong thinks he's going to have a heart attack if I keep saying that! ;o)
    Talk to you soon!

  3. Hi. I kind of "surfed" into your blog. I am interested in following it. We are currently waiting on TA for our son, Jon Paul, who is in Fujian. He is also blind in one eye (same eye as Lottie, infact). Please feel free to check out our blog.

    All the best!
